Chapter 1: In Evil's Grasp

A Note to the Reader:

Link: Hello, avid readers! Please, allow me to introduce our lovely author, Aubrey, known to many of you here at ZL as Miss Fearsome Pirate. Aubrey has been slaving away for the past month working on this wonderful story for your own enjoyment. Isn't that nice of her? How does she do it all and still have time to actually have a life?

Aubrey: I'll tell ya how! Night after sleepless night of nothing but writing! My eyes are permanently bloodshot! OH, THE SEARING PAIN!!

Link: Okay... well anyways, I think we should all thank the author for her hard work. Also, I am here to explain a few things about the story to you. Being the reader and all, you may have a few questions and I am here to answer them for you. First of all, when you begin to read you will notice the name of a certain character at the beginning of a chapter or halfway through it. The names indicate who the next part of the story will be about- kind of like a "their point of view" thing. Pretty creative, huh? And now, without further ado, I present to you our first chapter in, The Hilt of Hyrule!!!

~Midyedai~

Eye’s fixed on the structure before her, Midyedai rode toward Hyrule castle. She had followed the cobblestone path from Kakariko village to the castle many times and had seemingly remembered each and every stone set into the road. She was a Sheikah- a guardian to the royal family, and it was her duty to keep the young Princess Ruzailia out of harm’s way.

She halted her midnight black horse at the gates, and waited for the guards to let her pass. They opened the heavy iron rod gates and nodded their approval as she rode by. She tied her steed and entered into the castle.

“Good morning, Midyedai.” The eldest daughter of the king waved to her.

“Is it?” replied Midyedai glumly.

“Yes, I would say so. You really ought to look on the bright side more often…” said Princess Zelda.

“Where is Princess Ruzailia today?” Midyedai tried to change the subject. She hated how happiness just came so easily to certain people, especially since it had never come to her. Her past was one of cruelty and disorder.

“The library as usual.” answered Zelda.

Midyedai followed the corridor to the east wing of the castle were the Royal Library was located. She gently pushed the sturdy wooden doors open, making sure not to disturb any readers. A young girl looked up from her book as she entered. “Hi, Midy!” said the girl excitedly.

“What are you reading?” Midyedai sat down next to her.

“A book, silly.” Midyedai rolled her eyes at the childish remark. “Don’t roll your eyes at royalty! I could have your head for that.” joked the young princess. Midyedai wasn’t usually one to joke, but she gave a little laugh anyway to please the princess.

“What do you want to do today?” questioned Midyedai.

Ruzailia got up from her chair. She walked over to a table with two glass cases on it. Each case held a rotating golden triangle. “Tell me about those, Midy.”

“For the hundredth time, don’t call me Midy!” Midyedai walked over next to Ruzailia. “These are the Triforces of power and wisdom. They have been passed down through the royal family for generations.”

“Where is the other one?” asked Ruzailia.

“Hmm?”

“The other one! There are three aren’t there? I have them on my dress. See?” The princess pointed at the symbol that was embroidered onto her gown.

“I’m not sure. You can probably find something about it in this library...”

“But Midy, I’ve read all the books here.”

Midyedai pulled a thick book off of one of the higher shelves. “All of them?”

“Okay, maybe not all of them, but most of them.”

“Let’s take it out to the courtyard with us.” said Midyedai as she walked out of the room. Ruzailia followed.

They sat down on a bench, shaded by a tall Spring Blossom tree. Ruzailia crawled into Midyedai’s lap and opened the book. “Look! There it is!” Ruzailia yelled as she turned the page.

Midyedai began to read. “The Triforce- created by the goddesses, Din, Nayru and Farore. The Triforce is made up of three different pieces- power, wisdom and courage. When united as one, the Triforce is capable of granting a wish to whoever touches it.”

“Wow! That’s amazing. What would you wish for, Midy?”

“Don’t call me Midy!”

“Fine! Fine! But what would you wish for?”

Midyedai had a distant look on her face. “I’d wish to change the past.” she said simply.

Ruzailia stood up “Well, I know what I’d wish. I’d wish that I was older so I could have the throne first, before Zelda.”

“Really? I never knew you wanted that.” said Midyedai

“Yeah, well…” Ruzailia hesitated, “Let’s go back to the library. There’s something else that I’m curious about.”

Ruzailia ran down the corridor. “You sure are getting into all this history aren’t you?” yelled Midyedai as she ran after the princess. Ruzailia threw open the doors causing quite a ruckus. An old man had entered the library while the two were outside. He was obviously disturbed by the noise and decided to move to the other side of the room.

“So what is it?” whispered Midyedai

“Over here.” Ruzailia grabbed Midyedai’s hand and led her over to a stone table. The hilt of a sword was displayed on top of it. “This. Tell me about this.”

“The Hilt of Hyrule- This too has been past down through your family. It was whole. It had a blade, but…” Midyedai paused.

“But what? What happened?” asked Ruzailia.

“I guess it broke off and got lost…” said Midyedai.

“Indeed it did,” confirmed the old man. He had been listening to the conversation and couldn’t help but butting in. “It was lost in battle, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be found again. The wielder of this mighty blade saved many lives. He was a true hero. The righteousness that filled his soul was poured into that sword, making it extremely powerful. When whole again and in the right hands, it’s capable of many things, but in the grasp of evil, it can cause much destruction and devastation.”

“How do you know all that?” asked Ruzailia somewhat smugly.

“I was the wielder.” replied the man.

“This was your sword? What is it doing here?” asked Ruzailia.

“The sword is sacred and should be kept in a sacred place.” The old man stood up, stretched then walked out of the room. Midyedai started to follow him, but when she looked, he was gone.

“Midy, we just met a hero!” squealed Ruzailia.

“Yeah…” Midyedai had that distant look again.

That night, as Midyedai rode home, she wondered about the strange old man. “Had the sword really belonged to him? He was so small and frail that she couldn’t imagine him in battle, let alone even holding up a sword. And just what did he mean by “in the grasp of evil?” She put the thought in the back of her mind and continued toward home.

~Ruzailia~

Back at the castle, Ruzailia was wondering the same thing as she walked to her room. The sound of voices stopped her in her place. It was her father and mother and her sister, Zelda. Ruzailia poked her head around the corner. If her father caught her up this late he would be angry. She decided to listen.

“Zelda, Your mother and I have important duties that need to be seen to in Calatia. It’s urgent, so we will be departing tomorrow. We will be gone only a month. I trust that you will rule the kingdom fairly in that time.”

“Father, I-” Zelda started.

The queen interrupted. “We know that it’s your first time taking care of things alone, but we believe that you are old enough now to know what’s right for Hyrule and what’s not. This will give you some experience for when it is your turn to take the throne.”

“I will try my best...” replied the princess.

Ruzailia was always envious of her sister. Zelda was always so happy. She didn’t seem to have a care in the world. Ruzailia always thought about the future of Hyrule. She thought about when she, herself, would take the throne. Zelda was older so it was only right that she got the throne first. Ruzailia was still too young to rule anyway, but none of this mattered to her. She was furious. She stomped off to bed in a huff and ran the conversation through her head once more. The more she thought about it, the angrier she became. She tried to think about something else. She remembered the earlier events of the day- the mysterious old man, the Hilt of Hyrule, the Triforces. That’s when it hit her. She had an idea…

~Midyedai~

Midyedai woke up late the next day. She hurried to the castle. Everything seemed so quiet. Something didn’t seem right. When she came to the gates, the guards where nowhere to be seen. She heaved open the heavy doors herself. Once inside the castle, she could clearly confirm that something was wrong. She ran to the throne room. The king and queen where gone, but Zelda was there.

“Zelda!” she called out. Zelda didn’t answer. As Midyedai approached, she noticed that the princess’s eyes were shut. She was asleep. “Your Highness, wake up!” Midyedai shook Zelda’s shoulder.

“She will not wake.” The strange old man that Midyedai met the day before walked out from a dark corridor

Midyedai turned around. “Wha…what happened? Where is Ruzailia!? Is she alright?”

“It may help you to know that she is indeed alright, but missing, along with the Triforces and the Hilt of Hyrule.” assured the man. Midyedai looked at him puzzlingly. “You are confused. Let me explain. I came here to the castle this morning to study in the library. When I entered the room, I noticed that the Triforces where missing. I checked the Hilt and saw that it too was gone. I went to inform Princess Zelda, but was stopped in my tracks by a strange sight. It was Ruzailia. A dark beam of light was coming from her hands, levitating the Hilt and the two pieces of Triforce high above her head. She was casting some kind of spell over Zelda and the castle workers. They all fell into a deep slumber. Ruzailia ran out of the castle.”

“A spell?” questioned Midyedai. “And just why would she take the Triforces and Hilt?”

“I believe that the power of the Hilt aloud her to cast the slumber spell, but the reason to your second question I cannot answer. I do not know the young princess well enough to distinguish.”

Midyedai thought back to the day before. She remembered the conversation between herself and Ruzailia in the courtyard about the wish. “Princess Ruzailia wanted the throne before Zelda.”

“So it is an act of jealousy. I fear for the child and the kingdom. If she finds the third Trifforce, she will surely wish to rule. If she is also seeking the blade, her evil intentions could bring dismay to the kingdom.” said the old man.

“Where are the king and queen?” asked Midyedai concernedly.

The man answered, “They had duties to attend to in Calatia. They won’t be back for about a month or so I’m afraid.”

Midyedai knew that it was her duty to keep Ruzailia safe and to protect the Royal Family from harm. She turned to look at Princess Zelda. She was curled up comfortably in her throne. She turned back around to thank the wise man for his helpful advice, but he was gone again.

Staying at the castle was pointless. There was nothing Midyedai could do there to help the Royal family. She had to find Ruzailia and convince her to stop before the entire kingdom was under her command. Midyedai left the castle and rode back home to suit up for her quest. She would need some traveling clothes, some money, and of course her sword.

Sounds like the beginning of a fun adventure. Names are a bit awkward - but meh - they'll probably grow on me.
