The Legend of Zelda

Chains. Chains now bind the desolate land of Hyrule, a land whose barren husk lies in place of the glory of bygone days. Trees once volatile now wither, crops shrivel, and rivers sink into the earth, refusing to nourish this precious land. The once-flourishing people of this land are dying, their very sustenance wrenched from them.

Women and children are inexplicably plucked from their villages and carried off by their avaricious neighbors. Men are slaughtered, cattle bawl in their death throes, and old men and women pass away without memory. The dead rise from their graves and exact unprovoked fury upon the innocent. Strange creatures appear in the rivers, polluting the once-clear waters. Mighty warriors grow fearful, shirking their oaths to the king and country, and fleeing the wastes that were once their abodes.

The people have lost their guardians; have fallen out of favor with the gods. Shrines once revered are now in disarray, and ancient temples have fallen in ruins. Vandals sack the sacred stores of the holy places, and loot the tombs of the renowned.

For years, the people have forgotten about the Triforce, the relic that once bound the nation together. Three golden triangles each granted to the ones with the greatest Power, Wisdom, and Courage in the land. Now only Hyrule’s queen possesses the Triforce of Wisdom; the other two pieces are lost in the mists of time.

As the withered willows sway in the wind, they cry to the gods, “Send us a Deliverer! Save Hyrule from destruction!” They sway and moan; the people echo their cries in ever-increasing fervor. But until now, their cries have been unanswered.
