Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Prologue

As Link watched the Happy Mask Salesman walk away, he turned to the skullkid. "Can we be friends?" the skullkid asked, looking eager. Link nodded and mounted Epona. Before he could ride her at least five feet away, the skullkid yelled at him to stop. "Hey, do you think we'll ever meet again?" he asked shyly, looking at his feet.

"Of course. Until then..." Link said, and waved goodbye as he rode into the woods. Suddenly, a dark smile spread over the skullkid's face.

"Ha! Until then, my green-clad friend, until then....." he cackled. He turned to his fairys. "Come on! The festival's startin'!"

8 Months later

While wind blew through the trees, Link, at age 14, tried not to fall off Epona. She nickered softly and Link looked up. "Wow, this path looks awfully familiar. I wonder where we are, girl." he whispered to his faithful friend. Almost instantly, as if to answer his question, a faint howl echoed through the darkened forest. Link jumped and looked around nervously. Suddenly, a chorus of haunting voiced accompanied the phantom howling. Link nudged Epona into a canter and his breath became quickened as the noise wracked him terribly. "It's just the wind! It's just the wind!" he whispered, worried out of his mind.

Suddenly, a bone chilling scream rang through the woods. That was not human, Link thought, as the towering trees rushed past. Abruptly, Epona stopped, reared up onto her hind legs, and let out a demonic whinney. Link fell only to find that his horse had stopped in the middle of a freezing cold river. "Epona! I thought you were used to water now! What's wrong?" he cried, shivering from the extremly cold water. He shook his head, and just after he pulled his cloak around his shoulders, the evil howl became louder. But it sounded strangly like words, speaking to him. He glanced to where the voice was coming from and saw someone coming through the clearing.

"Help me!" she choked, gasping for breath. Link's eyes widened as he saw that she was hurt... bad. He caught her before she fell and winced as he saw the wound. It looked like a bite.

"What happened?" he asked her, grabbing a cloth from his bag and pressing it to her wounds to stop the blood.

"They got me... they finally got me!" the girl babbled, staring into space.

"Who? The wolf?" Link asked her, but his question was answered when he saw that the girl's eyes were deep garnet. He gently let go of her and backed away. "You- you're the wolf!!" he gasped, leaning against a tree. The girl stood tenderly and transformed.

"Yes, I am, but I'm not just any ordinary wolf." she growled, limping torwards Link. Link tried to talk, but his mouth wouldn't form words. "They were after me because I'm very rare. The only one left of my kind." the girl/wolf said.

She pressed her paws to Link's chest and shoved him towards Epona. "Y-Your one of the immortal wolves....the ones who have great-" Link stopped as she bit him on the butt.

"Get up there and I'll lead you out of here." she growled.

A few hours later, the wolf had led Link to the edge of the woods. "You'd best not return this way ever again." she said, transforming back into her human form.

"What's your name?" Link asked, before leaving. "Midn-" she began to say, but her voice trailed off as she fled back into the woods.

After Link had rode a few miles, he came to a tall tower with a familer green-clad man on top of it, yelling "Mr. Fairy! It's you! It's you!" Link turned Epona quickly and sped away.

"Never again do I want to see Tingle. Ever!!" Link whispered. Naught a moment later, Link stopped his horse and spoke to her. "Hey Epona, do you feel like going home for a few days?" he asked her, calmly. She nickered and tossed her head as if to nod. Link smiled warmly and took out his map. "Whoa, where are we? Tingle's Tower was back there, but on my map, he's on the edge. We went north, so we should be in the Lost Woods." he said, scratching his head as he thought.

Suddenly, as if in a memory, a haunting melody echoed from a secret grotto a few feet ahead of him. He and Epona went into it and almost instantly, the world around them blurred. Just like a long lost memory, Link suddenly got a flash back of his travels. The battle with Ganondorf, the moon plunging to earth, and the wolf girl following him through the woods. While he was lost in his memory, he snapped back to reality as he felt his feet hit the ground. Hard. "Ow!" he cried. He looked up and gasped. He had landed right in front of Rauru, in the Chamber of Sages. "Who know a secret grotto could lead here?" Link asked himself, sarcastically.

"Not just any secret grotto. It was one only you could see, as the Hero of Time." Rauru said.

"Oh, well. How do I get back to Hyrule?" Link asked.

"You don't." Rauru answered, grinning darkly.

"What?!" Link gasped, glaring at the sage. "I have to get back to Hyrule! You don't understand!" he roared, pulling out his sword.

"Swear alligiance to the Queen Zelda and I'll allow you entrance. If you are of Ganondorf's followers, you won't." Rauru sighed, rolling his eyes.

I didn't have to when I saved your sorry butts, Link though angrily. "I swear my alligiance to the Queen Zelda, as her old friend and hero." he sighed, sheathing his sword. Rauru raised his hand in a wave, and Link fell heavily to his knees. When he glanced back up, he was in front of Hyrule castle walls.

"Wow, it's good to be home." Link said, leading Epona to Kakariko Village.

Wow, that is a serious wall o words - you may want to edit this - if only to insert some spacing - was difficult to read.

Koroks Rock says:

You've several interesting ideas, though they're a bit "lost in the shuffle” (i.e. easy to miss). Before continuing, I'd give serious consideration to formulating paragraphs, so readers have an opportunity to "make sense" of the themes/conflicts presented.

I noticed you've included elements from three games (i.e. MM, OoT, and presumably TP), yet the chapter is short, and the action rushed (though it could be a result of formatting). I would suggest, when spanning multiple titles, to provide additional detail/explanation of how the events are interconnected (i.e. Link's abrupt return to Hyrule from Termina). As it is now, the story is more a “listing of points,” as opposed to a narration of sequenced and logical events. And keep in mind that, with multiple games, you’ve multiple storylines to connect and/or make sense of, in correlation with your own story.

With that said, I think “The Return of the Legend"—with a few tweaks—has incredible potential. An interesting read, indeed.
