Chapter 1: Prelude

P R E L U D E

As if by magic, he appeared. Stunning as usual, glowing almost. My breath would always get stuck in my throat at the sight of him. I knew he was coming, but it still suprised me as to how he would 'teleport' to me. He had told me before that it was a gift from the godesses, but I never believed him. My eyes locked onto his. His eyes were a soft, baby blue that seemed to have been impossibly matched with his golden colored hair. His garb was a simple green tunic, thick leather boots and gloves, and a long, pointed, droopy green hat. His sword was obviously in it's sheath, I knew that, even though his arm blocked my view.
"Zelda, I have something important to tell you." his voice startled me at first, but then had a soothing effect on my somewhat never-ending stress. I nodded. We were in the castle of Hyrule, my home since birth, and since he could only teleport to outdoor locations, I had waited at the balcony. The sunset was beautiful and it made his features seem more...intoxicating... I was starting to zone-out when he grabbed my hand and tugged me gently inside.
"We best stay indoors, the weather doesn't look too good." he said after he closed the doors behind him.
"B-but the sky was perfectly clear." I protested. I looked out the window to see, to my amazement, that there were dark gray clouds blocking the once breath-taking sky. I looked out the window for what seemed like forever until I heard a small "creak". I turned around to see Link lying on my bed, arms folded behind his head.
"What are you doin-"
"Shhhh" he cut me off, "I'm trying to think of an easy way to tell you what I wanted to say.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"I mean that you might not take it very well." He said. He was staring at the ceiling. Not once had he made eye contact with me since we had come inside. It was strangely bothering me. What is wrong with me? I thought over and over. Then a second thought shot through my mind. Are you attrac- No. I stopped myself. No way was I attracted to Link. There was just no way... Another "creak" disrupted my train of thought and I looked at my bed to see Link sitting on the edge. He patted the bed next to him slowly, and I walked over, equally as slow, and sat next to him. Sweat started to form on my hair line and I dabbed at it with the back of my hand. Oh no. I thought. Was I nervous about what he wanted to tell me, or was I....no....no.... I was once again startled when he spoke.
"I don't want to cause you anymore trouble. I've already almost gotten you killed several times. Several times too many. I'm leaving Hyrule, and I'm never coming back." Link said sadly. His face was a grimace and I could tell he was being dead serious.
"No." I said firmly.
"No?" He sounded confused. I looked him in the eye, forcing him to look back.
"No, you would only put my life in danger by leaving. If Ganon knows I'm uprotected, he will kill me ." I say. We both knew it was the truth. He had tried before many a times when he suspected Link of no longer being with me.
"That is why you have body guards, knights, and servants. I just volunteered." He said coldly. His words did hurt me, a great deal. Being as sensitive as I am, tears welled up in my eyes, but I would not let them go. Not with him watching. And I didn't plan on letting Link go either. He was pretty much my entire life. Everything except my very lady-like manners and Impa. Just as I thought her name, there was a loud knock on the thick wooden door that seperated my room from the large hallways of the castle.
"Zelda, what is going on in there? Are you alright? I can hear someone else in there with you. Unlock the door. Now."
I looked at Link with fear, there was no way Impa had forgiven him for what had happened a few days ago. He had to leave, or probably get hanged or beaten by Impa. I'm sure she was still furious. I don't blame her, I'm still kinda mad at him too.

-An hour before in Hyrule Castle Town-

As I rushed through the narrow streets of Hyrule Castle Town, I was shoved and pushed several times. Although I tried very hard not to run into someone, I still ended up smacking right into a young man who looked a little older than me. He had been holding a clay pot and my bumping into him had caused it to fall out of his hands. It crashed down onto the stone path and shattered. People kept walking by like nothing happened, or like they'd seen it happen a hundred times before.
I immidiatly bent down and started picking up the remains, when I felt a hand on my shoulder.
"Don't bother. It can't be fixed." The man whom had been carrying the pot said. I stood up and bowed apologetically.
"I'm so sorry, I didn't see you. Is there any way I can pay for it or replace it?" I asked after standing up straight again.
"No need to be sorry. I bought that from a merchant who told me something special about it. He said that as soon as it broke, I would find true love." The man said. It didn't seem like he meant me. He was staring off into the sky and I could tell that he already liked a different woman. He had good looks too. I wondered what the girl he liked was waiting for. He had long wavy black hair that came down a little past his ears. His eyes were an emerald green, they sparkled. He was quite tall, perhaps six feet? I could tell, even though he wore a coat, that he had strong arms. His legs must be muscular too. His jaw line was perfect and his lips were a flaming red. He was extremely handsome.
I bit my lip. What a lucky women. I'm sure she was beautiful, unlike me. I was short, maybe five feet. I had long hair, but it was an unattractive red and it was so thick I couldn't do anything with it but wear it plain. I was skinny, but a little too skinny. I had muscle on my arms from working on a ranch all my life, they seemed off with my petite body. My eyes were a green like his, but they didn't look anything like emeralds. Maybe green apples, something stupid like that.
"I didn't catch your name. Mine's Alexander, but everyone calls me Alex."
It's nice to meet you, Alex. My name is Malon. I live out on Lon Lon Ranch. was what I wanted to say, but instead I said-
"Hi umm...my names umm...Malon..."
Stupid stupid stupid!
"I'm s-sorry I ha-" I was cut off when someone yelled-
"Alexander? Alexander! Oh there you are!" a strange woman said.
Oh no...
"Alexander I've been waiting for ten whole minutes at the cafe. What ever has been holding you?" She asked. Her eyes slowly shifted to me.
"Who is this?" She used a tone of voice to make this sound like I had a disease or something. I could tell this wasn't going to end well.
Before he could even open his mouth to answer, she grabbed his arm and tugged him in the other direction. He looked back over his shoulder and mouthed sorry and waved. I waved back but he was already gone. Well that didn't go anything like what I thought it would.

-Meanwhile at Lake Hylian-

"But father!" I protested angrily.
"My final answer is no. It is not safe for you to go alone. And besides, you're a Zora, you would die. There's not enough water in the air for you to live off of." He said. He sounded annoyed. I crossed my arms, stuck my bottom lip out, and stomped off into my chambers.
I don't need your permission you foolish old man. I'll just leave, I can survive on my own. You just wait and see.
I layed on my bed, trying to think of a way to sneak out of the palace. Then I remembered the stone my mother had given me before she had died. I sat up, got out a small metal box from under my bed, and set it on my bed. I unhooked the latch and opened the box. Inside was a beautiful shiny blue stone. It sparkled, even though it was quite dark in my chamber. I whispered what my mother had told me to say when I wanted to make a wish.
"Elnoashta gomenee foavanes zeual..."
The stone lit up like the sun, a blue sun. I thought of my wish over and over in my head. Suddenly my bedroom was flooded with blinding light. When it dimmed, I looked at my arm. I had the pale white flesh of a Hylian.

-In Kokiri Forest-

As I scoop up some fallen deku nuts, I see Mido approach me out of the corner of my eye. I sigh and pick up the last nut before turning to him.

"What do you want?" I ask rudely. His blank expression remained the same.
"I came to see if you were alright." He smiled devilishly. I rolled my eyes and started to walk past him when he grabbled my arm.

"Where do you think you're going?" He said. We stared at eachother. His mouth spread into a smile and I smiled too. He pulled me into a hug. I had missed him so much. Mido had been in The Lost Woods for the past week searching for food. The forest children had been running low on food supplies and since they couldn't leave the forest, they were starving. In fact, Murphee had already died two days ago. Saria had walked into her house and she saw Murphee, skin and bones, lying on her bed.
"You should go home and eat some of those nuts, here take these berries." Mido handed me a couple berries. They were a little squished and when I took them I could see that his hands were stained red and purple.
"Thank you Mido." I said and ran home. I ate the berries as soon as I was inside. After they were all gone I realized that I had left the deku nuts with Mido. I opened my door and took a step out when I saw....well nothing. It was pitch black out. I would have to wait until morning to go get them, but by then they would be gone. Eaten by some ravenous Kokiri child.
I sighed and layed down on my bed. My stomach rumbled and I clutched it with my hand. Sometime during my starvation faccade I fell asleep. When I awoke I was still lying down, but I wasn't on my bed. In fact, I wasn't even in my house, or Kokiri Forest. Or even somewhere in the forest. The sun was shining bright and I had to close my eyes.
I then heard a familiar sound, a horse galloping. Link?
I tried to stand up, but I couldn't move. Only my eyes would respond. The galloping got louder, louder, louder, then it slowed down. I heard a thump and it was followed by the sound of footsteps.

"Miss? Might I ask what you're doing in the middle of Hyrule Field?" The stranger asked. No, he wasn't Link. His voice was too deep, too aged to be Link's. I tried to move my mouth, my lips worked, but no sound came out.
"Can you talk?" He asked.
I tried to nod. My head moved up and down a little.
"Do you need some help?"
I nodded again. He grabbed my arms and pulled me up, not letting go when I was on my feet. It was a good thing too because I couldn't feel my legs, or arms, or anything for that matter. I opened my eyes now that he stood between the sun and I. He was medium height. Almost six feet. He had short gray hair and his eyes were a darker gray. His face wasn't very wrinkled for his age.
"Who are you?" he asked.
"I'm Saria. I'm from Kokiri Forest. Where am I?" I respond.
"Well young lady , like I said, you're in Hyrule Field. You said you were from Kokiri Forest, right? That's quiet a ways away from here. How'd you wind up lying in the middle of nowhere?" He asked. He was squinting, looking at my hair.
"I don't know, I just woke up here. I didn't even know we could leave the forest without dying." I said. He was still staring at my hair.
"Is your hair....green?" He asked. That's why...
"Yes actually. Umm, you can let go now. I can feel my legs again." I said akwardly. He let go, slowly, and I steadied myself.
"Thanks." I said. Suddenly my head hurt. The pain got worse and worse, in a matter of seconds. My eyes blacked out, and the last thing I remember was the sound of galloping again.
